The Digital Nomad permit
A status for people working for a company or clients outside Spain. Granted for three years at once, it lets you live in Spain with your family and needs no Spanish employer.
Who it suits
- You are employed by a company registered outside Spain.
- You work for yourself and most of your income comes from foreign clients.
- You are moving with a spouse and children: the family applies with you.
- You want to keep your current job rather than find an employer in Spain.
What you will have to prove
- Work for a company or clients outside Spain; the share of Spanish clients is capped.
- At least three months with the employer or the clients, and the company itself at least a year old.
- Proven income: the benchmark is €45,588 a year for the applicant, plus an addition per family member.
- Health insurance from a Spanish provider for the full term, with no excess or waiting periods.
- A criminal record certificate covering the last five years, apostilled and sworn-translated.
- A degree or at least three years of proven professional experience.

Length, renewal and the path to permanent residence
- First permit
- Three years if you file from inside Spain. A consular visa is issued for one year, after which the three-year permit is arranged.
- Renewal
- Renewed for two years while the conditions hold: work outside Spain, income and insurance.
- Permanent residence
- Five years of continuous residence open the way to permanent residence. The programme has no 183-day rule, but absences count towards permanent residence and citizenship.
How it differs from the other programmes
Digital Nomad and the EU Blue Card solve the same problem from opposite ends: here the employer is foreign, there it is Spanish. If you already have a Spanish contract, look at the highly qualified route. If you do not work at all and live on savings, this is not your programme — that is no lucrativa.
